ALL Saturday afternoon, indeed, all through the day and far into the evening the home of Mrs. Hallie M. Mrs. Robert West Beaumont diverted the week for a few of her intimates in an old time spend the day. Si Several gathered about the tables of Miss Hortense Alexander on last Saturday evening for the study of whist. §§ ■ The concert and supper patronized by the Catholic ladies on Thursday evening was a great success. Maennerchor hall was simply a crush. The exercises were very interesting, and tha supper one fully up to the standard for which the Catholic ladies have long since made their record. It is now assured that the Boys’ School opens with the September term. §§ The City Federation meeting with Mrs. T. N. McMullen, Junior, on Mon day did not carry out its intended program, owing to the illness of Mrs. J. D. Thomas, who was to have read her paper prepared for the TexasColorado Chautauqua last summer. As a substitute, Prof. Fritz was invited to address the ladies upon the subject of Mental Concentration. Another prettv guest has been entertained by Mrs. Albert Cowan, Miss Ada Vinson of Shreveport. The diversion was a very merry little gathering with cards and a chafing dish supper on last Wednesday evening. None were present but young folks, a fact rather in keeping with all other social events of the week. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Sturgis with Mr. and Mrs. Walter Fort, however, each took a hand. This was an affair, altogether without form, but withal a very pleasant one, especially the merry hour while the chafing dish was simmering. There were neither favors nor scores to mark the progressions of the game. Miss Vinson is a young woman, highly endowed with physical as well as mental charms. She has just made a visit to Houston, where she was muchly feted in the social world. The young folks are always charmed by an invitation to'Mrs. Cowan’s agreeable home. The guests of this little affair were, Misses Alexander, Chandler, Willis, Long, Drane, Fannielu Pace and Carroll, with Messrs. Gregg, John Cowan, Wood, Chandler, Burrows, Marshall, Baum and Thorpe. §§ After all, there is something very congenial about a cosy little card party where every one meets his friends frequenty, rather than once, perhaps not at all, as he does when the tables approach the dozen. Such a jolly little game did Mrs. W. B. Knight of South Fifth street add to the social happenings last week. There were sixteen hands only, and a game which continued until the stroke of twelve. One of the very pretty features of arrangement was the score cords, an advance breath of the spring tide in cai;d spot shapes, hand painted in spring posies. These were in stands in the hallway for the entering guests’ selections. Larger shapes were the table markers. At about nine the game was formed. The favors were very pretty little souvenirs, a gauze fan, a filled cigar tray, a goose egg darner and a toy trinket. The lan was contested in a cut among Mrs. Rufus Chatham, Miss Burger, and Mrs. J. W. Hale, with Mrs. Chatham winner. Dr. Ferrell took the cigars, Dr. Foscue the booby and Mrs. Rhodes the darner. During the game, a cooling punch, parched peanuts and a cup of claret with a nut cake was passed and a cream brick closed the evening. Major Crow had his gramophone and, and with it entertained for a half hour. Mrs. Knight’s hospitality was so graciously dispensed that she held the spell of enjoyment over her guests long past the hour for a card party adjournment. Those so pleasantly entertained were, Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Womack, Miss Friend, Mr. A. McKenna, Dr. and Mrs. Foscue, Dr. and Mrs. Hale, Mr. Parker, Mrs. Chatham, Mr. Carter, Dr. and Mrs. Ferrell, Mr. Dodson, Mr. and Mrs. Rhodes, Mr. and Mrs. George Knight, Mr. Worth Burger, Mrs. Magee, Miss Magee and Major Crow. The past week has been characterized by quite a number of home gatherings among friends and neighbors, scarcely a party, yet a relief from the dullness that has lain over the social world for so long. There are many young hostesses who can plan and delight their friends with a pretty party, but few who can with their own hands bring to an artistic finish all that pertains to a large company at cards. Such, however, was Miss Florence Blair’s triumph on last Tuesday evening when she invited sixty young folks to join a game of euchre with her friend and guest, Miss Camille Scott of Dallas. The young folks have by no means had a plethora of gaiety within the last few weeks, which circumstance put them in the very mood for reaping the greatest possible enjoyment from Miss Blair’s courtesy. This home is admirably arranged for bringing guests into agreeable contact, and it wore its most cheerful aspect in honor of Miss Scott and the event. Miss Blair, Miss Scott and Miss Ollie Blair of Mississippi welcorned the arrivals. When the tallies for the game were distributed, it was found that they were all dainty little pen and ink sketches a la Gibson with a Oupid or two hovering over the American portraits. Also, when the prizes were taken from their hiding place, the skill of the gifted little hostess was quite pronounced. She had penned and framed into beautiful pictures, each a Gibson Girl in light and dark shades, which went as prizes to Miss Norma Conger and Mr. Tom Motz. As the consolation, Mr. Lacy took The Soldiers of Fortune. In the passage of tables there was much said by way of pleasantry and many little attentions bestowed, all of which went to make up a thoroughly agreeable evening. The refreshments were served in dainty bits of china, deco Continued on Page 2.
