Acoording to the report which reached here from Rio today, the insurgents’ fleet, after two days’ desultory fighting with the govern-mant troops, made a determined and successful attack upon Rio, which resulted in the capture of that city. It is added that Piexoto has resigned in favor of Mello, and that Piexoto is a prisoner in the hands of his enemies. Two Sensational Letters. By Associated Press to tlie News. Abilene, Kan., Dec. 22.—Two letters were picked up on the street here Wednesday by a oountry woman and handed to the police. One of the letters is from Topeka, dated Dec. 10, and says: .“We have concluded to make two jobs out of the white house business. We will take the oldest child first. We ean get her all right.. Mollie will get her and hand her over to us and we will keep her until a reward is offered. It means thousands to us to get this child, Ruth, and we will get her, too, in January. Address me in Chicago. We will go right on.” The other letter was from Minneapolis and written prior to the one already quoted. It said: “We have everything ready for the White House, and will send Grover to hades when the bugle sounds. We will also get our $20,000. We will start for the White House now. We have never failed in our jobs, and won’t now. There is mucli more in the houses of the goldbugs and Vanderbuilts.” The letters bear evidence of sincer-and the police consider them j the work of cranks. A queer aoting individual, who was around the city early in the week declaring that he would soon be rich, is supposed to have been the recipient of letters. He has gone east and has not been located. A Crank Wanted. By Associated Press to lhe News. Washington, D. C., Dec. 22.— H crank, who signed himself Joseph Don Jam, 73 Passaic street, Newark, is wanted by the secret service for writing threatening letters to a number of prominent officials. Vice-President Stevenson is the man to whom he sends most of the epistles. Senators Sherman and Mills have also been objeots of attention on the part of the crank. He is a Polish anarchist. C., Dec. 22.— I Neither the state nor navy depart-ment has received any news indi-eating the capture of Rio and the downfall of Piexoto. At the navy the opinion is expressed that Capt. Picking would promptly notify the department of such an occurrence. The government here, however, has for some days inclined to the belief that Piexoto 'was losing ground and that he was liable to meet with serious reverses in a short time. At the Brazilian legation it was stated that no news had been received, and the rumor of Rio’s | capture was doubted. Ordinarily I the legation receives advices each day. Deceased was born in 1840, was in Lord Salisbury’s cabinet in August, 1886, as secretary of state for the colonies, and was appointed secre taiy of war in January, 1887. Do Not Credit It. A Child Devoured, By Associated Press to The News. Selma, Ala., Dec. 22.—The body of a three year old child was found yesterday on a high cliff by a party of searchers who had been looking for it for a week. The child had been left alone and when an older child returned he saw an eagle with what appeared to be a child in its talons. The body was recognized by bits of clothing, the flesh being eaten from the bones. Numerous remains of animals were found at the same place. A Prom I net Clergyman. By Associated Press to The News. Boston, Dec. 22,—The W. J. Potter, who died from apoplexy, after being found unconscious in a doorway in Providence street, late last night, is now known to be Rev. W. J. New Orleans advanced 1 point at the opening on the Liverpool re-sponse to our advance yesterday be-ing about as expected, and after ad-vancing 1 point additional declined gradually 9 points on free receipts at ports and indications of free in-terior receipts.
