London, Eng., May 18.—Ad-vices from Constantinople regard-ing the seizure of Harper’s Maga-zine by the Turk sh government on account of the alleged immoral-ity of its contents, state that the seizure was not, as at first reported, because the book contained poems by Scblegel, but was probably due to an artiole on European armies and the political situ a ion, which would not be considered obj ctiona ble anywhere oulside of Turkey. The seizure of Schlegel’s poems was made separately and both ac-tions were explained es having been taken in the interest of mor-ality. Tne magazine . and poems were the property of an Englishman residing in Constantinople. They were stopped and confiscated by Turkish customs officials, pre-sumably on the advioe of the oensor. A Solitary Highwayman Holds Up a Texas and Pacific Passenger Train. . Special to The News. Coloeado, May'18.—At Kent, a station 33 miles west of Toyab, the Texas and Pacific eastbound train was held up about 10 o’clock last night by a robber, who got 161.50 in currency, two express packages containing $210, two checks for $1,455.10 and a small sum taken from passengers. The tram robber, who was mask-ed, forced the engineer and fireman at the point of a revolver to enter the coaches. There was $15,680 in the express car, but the amount given above waB all that was taken. The money taken was remittances from station agents. The robber looked like a oowboy and went about his business with remarkable neive and coolness. LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE. Henry Villard. By Associated Press to The News. New York, May 18.—Henry Villard authorizes the statement that on March 1st, 1893, he sent to President Oakes his resignation as director; that by being urged by Oakes, Villard remained to help fund the floating debt; that he would not remain in the board longer than hie present term, which ends next October Bank of England Advances the Rate of Discount. By Associated Press to The News. London, May 18.—At the open-ing of the stook exchange this mor-ning the market was steady in con-sequence of better feeling abroad. Liquidations are still in progress. Grand trunk of Canada consols are improved, but Canada Pacific shares are flat. The expected a 1 vance of the Bank of England’s rate of dis-count was made today. At the regular court or meeting of the directors of the bank today it was decided to further advance the rate one-half per cent, to four per cent. On Thursday last the rate was ad-vanced from three to three and one-half per cent. The rate established today is the the highest that has prevailed for a considerable time. New York, May 18 y—A large corporation, under the name of the United Dressed Beef company, has been reoently organized by New York merchants for the purpose of making themselves better able to compete with the large western con-cerns which have hitherto practi eally controlled the beef industry of the oountry. The Directors Say They will Resume in Three Days By Associated Press to The News. Chicago, May 18.—The Evans-town National bank, of Evanstown, 111., c'.osed its doors this morn-ing. The capital stock of the bank is $100,000, It did business with the Chemical National bank. National Bank Examiner Caldwell says: “I found that the accounts were in such shape that I would have to take at least tl ree dtys to get at the bottom of things, and when the directors met last tven ing I suggested that the bank be closed, and this was done.” The directors announce that they will resume in three days. --------------------------------f----------- Glenny & Co’s. Saranac Lake, N.Y.,May 18.— One of the feats of strength per-formpd by BlondiD, the strong man traveling with Cole’s cirtus, which has been giving exhibitions in this section, was the holding together of two large horses that the attendants endeavored to lead in opposite di-rections. In this act at the lake, the placid horses used had been lately purchased aud were never b3- fore in the ring. They became frightened and riared and plunged and BlondiD, in his efforts to hold them, ruptured blocd vessels of the head and chest. He fainted from the loss of blood and soon after he was carried from the ring he died.
