Nov. 17—The Reading sty- ' Receipts; net‘5,038; gross, ux@n% n%m% wm% 8,218; Ex- W”e occasionally meet an individ* ual Who might have adorned the ninth century, hut a sad disgrace to tho uiuoteeuth, aud why this old timed race is perpetuated is a inyg-' tery, unlSssIt is to furnish us with a living witness of “what used to was.” Itisleft almost entirely with this class to wonder “why women are admitted iti the Grange,” and with equal propriety they might ask why women are admitted iu lha farm house. Now, >.t i» lar from our intentions to gratify “old logy” with an answer, but'with the hope of en» couraging our sisters in the order, we propose showing that 1 hey not onlyhavc a right io be admitted, but are a real beuelit to ihe Grauge. The Gratige orgau zatiou proposes such instruction as shall peffieirate every department of a thoroughly equipped farm, aud at the same time such encouragement Io the social virtues as shaii reach each individual member of;the farm"household. * While women do »ot wield the plough, gpailc aud hoc, their work ie indispeusible to the comfort of tho laborers, ami prosperity of the farm. . Woman’s mission is noble in any sphere, but double honor is certainly due tho worthy housewife upon a farm. The multiplied duties, as well as.t-heir variety, call forth every eu-ergy of which woman is possessed to adapt her labors to nwet the con-stantly recurring nett' demands, aii of which .directly or indirectly effect the prosperity of the farm, and the woman who faithfully performs the duties’allotted her, certainly add* as much wealth to it as though she labored in the field. In addition to this, her lovefor the beautiful natur-ally promptsber to spend some por-tion of hor time in adorning t he mod-cat country home, and even iu this her labor is remunerative in that it furnishes pleasant entertainment to the laborers during the hours of re-creation. Much of the product of the farm passes through her hands, and a con-scientiouB desire to promote its wel-faro dictates a free use of economy without stinginess. To digress * little from the main subject, we will hero say that farms may be kept con-stantly drained by slack manage-ment in the kitchen and household, and to conduct this business -econ-omically, and without u disagree-able closeness, certainly requires a tact and ingenuity that ought to be studied. In all these labors woman would not be womanly if she did not give a loftier moral tone to those with whom she daily associates, it is her element, aud often unconscious-ly to herself, slio rounds off the rugged edges of rugged natures to au astonishing smoothness. Then if the interest of the farmer’s wife and daughter is so closely allied to the farm, and interwoven with the farmer’s interest, has she not a right” to Grange privileges? If it is her privilege ana duty to prepare com-forts aud luxuries tor lire laborer upon the farm, it is no less so in the Grange. If it is her privilege to partake of these comforts with the laborers around the family board, it is no less so iu the hall of the Grange. It is here also as well a* upou the farm that womanly nature will crop out i|t those little outward adornments so refreshing to the eye, and while probably her moral in-iluence may reach ouly Iter ovvu family circle upon the farm, the whole moral atmosphere of the Grange is purified by her admission, and the gates at once barred to the vicious and immoral. We ouly speak of these characteristics as traits, peculiar to female character, aud no more unnatural to women than mental or bodily strength is to meu, and no less necessary to the prosperity of the order. EHigibil-ity for membership-in t ho G runge depends upou astrictgsode of moral-ity, as well as the occupation, aud the admission of women certainly strengthens the moral safety of the order in two directions, viz: No man of good character wiil east a ballot to admit unworthy nersone upou a social equality with his wile or daughter, and uo woman will vote for the admission of an individual whom she knows to be an unworthy toy! I companion iu social lile. Tho pecu- Liarity gives .the order a high moral character possessed by no other se-hank B, HABER, No. CO, Austin Avenue Wa?0, Octabor 21, 1877-dly Pamphlet.
