Gilmer Texas, Nov. 7, 1874. Editor Examiner: I send a list of five, which I regret is not much larger. I presented the claims of y our paper, at our last two meetings, and got the number of subscribers named. I have the list will be swelled before a great while; hoping that you may contin-ue to wield the pen in favor of our noble institution. I remain yours, &c., G. Christian. Lovelady,JNov. 10, 1874. J. W. Downs, Esq.: Worthy Brother:—Enclosed find a list of 7 names, who want the Exami-ner and Patron. Crops arc short, pri-ces low, and our farmers ail in debt; but notwithstanding it all, I think we will be able to make you up a large club from this Grange before a great while. At least I will use my every endeavor for your paper, for it is richly deserving of it. Yours, R. D. Goree. Dr. J. R. Riggs, Mas ter of Lake City Grange, sends us a list of subscribers from Jefferson, and with the expression of a cordial wish for the success of the Examiner and Patron, and of our Ord-er, in the State, says: We have adopted the custom of having two or more essays, on pertinent subjects read at each regu-lar meeting, and wish to have some of them published for our mutual good. Have you the time and space ? In reply, we heartily commend tlie custom; and shall always esteem it hot** a pleasure, and a duty, to give our “time and space” to communications, to the utmost extent, not incompatible with the general interest and value of the paper. So numerous are the demands upon us, that to secure publication, com-munications must moreover, be brief, and to the point. Deputy J. L. Ammons reports from Brenham, Nov. 21st, the following new organizations: Stonewall Grange, at Kirby Chapel, Waller county; Master, Win." M. Ben-nett; post office, Hempstead; Secretary, J. W. Renfrew. Austin County Grange, at Buclthorn, Austin county; Master, A. B. Stone, Sr.; Secretary, A. B. Stone, J r.; postoffice, Hempstead, Waller county. Travis Grange, Travis, Austin county; Master, J. Henry Sheltmrn; Secretary, James E. Stiven; postoffice, Travis, Aus-tin county. Ervin Grange; Bellville, Austin county; Master, J. P. Ervin; Secretary, Wil-liam Withworth; postofllce, Bellville, Austin county. In answer to a question, the Constitu-tion and By-laws will be printed in the German language, as soon as possible. Worthy Master R. T. Sharpe sends a list of six from Ladonia, and says: “ I expect not to be surpassed by any Grange in the State in the number of subscribers, although our Grange may not be .so large as some." Ei.ysian Fields, Texas, Nov. 12. Editor Examiner and l’atron ; Your paper, the Examiner and Pa-tron, is giving universal satisfaction amongour members. Our cause is a good one, anil in 'i exas we have an able advo-cate and defender, which L hope we do, or will appreciate and prove, by bringing your valuable paper into every farm house m our gallant Lone Star Statu. Fraternally, G. T. Polgon. Our valued friend, Thos. Jackson, Deputy of Robertson county, advises us of the organization ©f a Grange in Beck’s prairie, with 21 charter members, all prosperous farmers, E. D. Prewit, Master, and J. II. Alsabrook, Secretary, post-office, Bremond. “I was wonderfully pleased,” says our old friend, “ with the intelligence and sociability of the people. They have a beautiful, prosperous and enterprisin neighborhood. All well pleased with the workings of the Order, and desirous of further information, and I think when your interesting paper is introduced among them you will get a good list of sub-scribers. “Brother J. P. Childers, in showing me his beautiful farm and the productions of the soil, called my attention to an varly and favorite sweet potato called tlie Haytiyam, the seed of which was ob-tained from the Agricultural Society at Washington. They surpass anything I have seen in that line, and I would re-commend them to the farmers generally. With my best respects to you, I remain, fraternally, Thos. Jaokson, Deputy Robertson County. November 7,1874, d&w2W who correspond by cypher with agents or principalsten thousand miles away in less time than a wholesome meal of victuals is eaten, who long ago recognized the power of steam over wind, as a motive in bringing the commodities of the world together, can scarcely ever find time to attend church on the Sabbath day. They feel it time thrown away[ unless it is in sleeping; for the two hours service fails to interest them. There has been too much of it. Not so with the ser-mon to a large congregation at tlie Epis-copal church yesterday, delivered by their new pastor, the Rev. J. J. Clemans, of Selma, Ala. Mqy be I have heard as good—never better, find on the su bject never care to hear more—could but wisli that every man and -f oman, in the world, could hear as good a ofie on tlie same— “Remember tlie Sabbath day to keep it holy.” ; ,• The ladies off the Metlio'dist church, have been holding a Fair at Gray’s Hall, for the 'benefit _of Sherne Chapel, and their efforts have been crowned with abundant success, having received some $1,800. ; Twenty miles of the narrow gauge road has been contracted for, and the cutting of dirt will commence in a few days, and all Houston will again be happy. New sugar is being received and cotton is coming in quite freely, twice the amount having been received this year, ns compare^ with corresponding dates last year, and the knowing ones tell me it’s the Grangers doing it—for why?—money is so easy here in comparison to what I have found it elsewhere. I was showed a sample of new sugar and syrup from Mr. T. W. House’s Ar-cola Plantation, in Brazoria county, which is classed as tlie best that has ever been produced in Texas, and rates far above any of foreign production that is in this market. Less than a two. column article would not suffice to treat the subject— Texas as a sugar-producing State—there-fore, I defer writing thereon until the coming season. T. N. T. W.
