But how it is to bene-fit us in Texas we fail to see all at once. We would much prefer that Galveston be made the port for our direct trade, as we have j already a considerable fleet to carry our cotton to Liverpool which frequently returns loaded with ballast or almost worthless salt. We imagine the best thing that the grangers can do is to de-round free trade, and direct trade comes as a matter of course. The reason tve have no more direct at the South with Europe, is to be found in the fact that the imposi- The Arrival of the Delegates. The Reception. There was hurrying to and fro through Waco this morning, as carriages and omnibuses, hacks, buggies and every conceivable kind of vehicle was rattling over the streets and across the suspen-sion bridge, to bring into the city our expected guests. About five hundred persons assembled at the depot, awaiting the arrival of the ten o’clock train over the North-western road, which came in promptly on time, bringing about one hundred delegates, (among whom were some thirty or more ladies,) of the Southern Baptist Convention, lately in session at the city,of Jefferson in this State. Memphis, May 13.—The levee of Pearson’s plantation, opposite Friar’s Point, is broken. Water is in the town of Friars Point three feet deep. Boston, May 13.—The Louis-iana relief fund has reached the sum of $44,500. Little Rock, May 13.—There is j a quorum in both houses of the Legislature now in session; , 14 members in the Senate and 25 in the House; both branches are proceeding with business. Last night a portion of White’s cavalry and two companies of Baxter’s infantry made a dash upon the depot ot the Cairo and Fulton Railroad, capturing a car of ammunition that belonged to their parrot guns and was over-looked tho night previous wheu the guns were take off the train. A slight skirmish ensued between the opposing pickets near the spot where the fight occurred yes-terday, but Baxter’s forces, under Col. Cross, succeeded in getting the ear attached to a locomotive and ran it out of the city two and a half miles, where they unloaded it, bringing the supplies in by wagon movement. Evening Dispatches. Now Orleans, May 14—The tow boat, Tillie Jewett, collided with the steamship City of Hous-ton at 10:30 last night below Point Bohemia, and sank in 12 feet water. The fireman and cab-in boy wero drowned; the rest of the crew clung to the wreck until rescued by the steamer Ida. The City of Houston proceeded on her course. Rome, May 14.—The Pope re-plying to a visitor from America animadverted severely on the 'governments of Mexico aud Gua-ternala for permitting bitter per-secutions of churches in those countries. The Pope appeared fatigued and was unable to give audience to ail the delegations that waited upon him. Washington, May 14.—House passed the bill amending the char-ter of the Froedmen’s Savings k Trust Company. Wilmington, Del., May 14.— The iron steamship,Hudson, 2500 tons, for the New York and New Orleans line, was launched this a. m. from the ship-yard of Pussey, Jones & Go., in presence of five thousand spectators. Last night a portion of White’s cavalry and two companies of Baxter’s infantry made a dash upon the depot ot the Cairo and Fulton Railroad, capturing a car of ammunition that belonged to their parrot guns and was over-looked tho night previous wheu the guns were take off the train. A slight skirmish ensued between the opposing pickets near the spot where the fight occurred yes-terday, but Baxter’s forces, under Col. Cross, succeeded in getting the ear attached to a locomotive and ran it out of the city two and a half miles, where they unloaded it, bringing the supplies in by wagon movement. Evening Dispatches. Now Orleans, May 14—The tow boat, Tillie Jewett, collided with the steamship City of Hous-ton at 10:30 last night below Point Bohemia, and sank in 12 feet water.
