Brutality of a Louisiana Mob. Lafayette, La., September 11.—A brutal murder was committed six miles from this place on the Abbeville road Monday night. Near the roadside stood a small cabin and in this lay the muti-lated bodies of Rosemond Cormier, col-ored, and his daughter, Rosalie, aged 15. The following particulars were elicited at the coroner’s inquest: Rosemond, who was over 60 years of age, was w hipped and ordered to leave home months ago by a band of regulators and failing to obey, met an untimely end Monday night. It appears that about 10 o’clock a party of masked men rode up to his house and demanded addmittance, and on being refused broke down the door. The old man fired both barrels of a shot-gun into the crowd, killing a white man named John Justice. Rosemond then fled, pursued by the now enraged party, who fired repeatedly at the fugitive. They overtook him about 200 yards from the house and blew’ the back part of his head off and then crushed in the frontal bone by blow’s with their guns. The body of Rosalie lay stretched in front of the cabin this morning with her throat cut from ear to ear. The little cabin was riddled with bullets from Winchester rifles and smaller arms, about 200 balls having been fired into it. As the cabin was an isolated one, the coroner’s jury could find no evidence in criminating any one. The body of masked men who murdered Rosemond and his daughter numbered about thirty. The regulators before reaching Cormier’s house severely wdiipped two negroes, Lueien Mont-gomery and Joseph, alias Toby Cobb. The Mississippi Race Troubles. St. Louis, September 11.—A dispatch from Coffeyville, Miss., says the trouble in LeFlore and Tallahatchie counties, wdiich was supposed to have been set-tied, is yet menacing. The latest reports from those counties estimates the total number of dead negro insurrectionists at seventy-five. At a reunion of Mississ-ippi soldiers held at Winona, speeches were made by Senators Walthall and George, in which they w’arned the peo-pie of the South about being hasty in dealing with the negroes, and anticipat-ing further serious trouble with that race in the delta. Sunset Cox’s Funeral. New’ York, September 11.—The fune-ral of the late S. S. Cox will take place at 10 o’clock next Friday morning. It has not yet been decided in what church the services will be held, neither have the pall-bearers been selected. The clerk of the house of representatives has ap-pointed the following named representa-tives as a committee to take charge of the funeral arrangements of the late member of that body : Carlisle, Randall, Holmann, Felix, Campbell, Zenv,Heard, Muchler, Kelly, McKinley, Cannon, Reed, Burrows and O’Neil, of Pennsyl-vania. The Gettysburg Dedication. Gettysburg, Pa., September 11.—This is a day devoted to the special dedica-tion of Pennsylvania monuments by the respective regiments. During the day veterans of each regiment are formed in line and headed by a band or drum corps marched to their monument where ex-ercises were held. The dedication was attended only by survivors of the com-mands. No system was observed and each regiment went on its w’ay. Lewine Bros. AUSTIN AND SIXTH STREET.
