Summary	Calvin B. Smith was a professor emeritus of museum studies at Baylor University; Ollie Mae Moen’s work on the Youth Cultural Center, which would eventually become the Ollie Mae Moen Discovery Center; collaboration with Mrs. Moen, Jill Barrow, Houston McGaugh, and superintendent of schools Frank Kudlaty on Mrs. Moen’s museum; working to move the museum into a new building; the discovery of Columbian mammoth skeletons on the banks of the Brazos River; initial excavation work and press coverage; putting together a 1987 symposium around the mammoth discovery; initial donations of funding by Sam Jack McGlasson and Buddy Bostick to preserve the mammoth site; developing plans for the physical facilities of a mammoth museum; conversations with the National Parks Service on the potential for a national park at the mammoth site; Baylor University’s objection to Smith’s continued work with the mammoth project on the basis of supposed ethical breaches; disagreements with President Sloan’s administration about the handling of funding and architectural planning of the museum; disagreements with President Sloan’s administration about plans to attain Tier 1 status and the cutting of the gerontological studies department; setting the record straight on supposed lapses in judgment and ethics; possibilities for the museum that fell through due to politics or lack of funding; initial and continuing fundraising efforts; other projects in the works in New Mexico; memories of directorship of the Strecker Museum and freelance work after leaving Baylor.
