VOLUME III NUMBER 1 AUGUST 22, 1978
John Kennedy slaying
figure believed found AUGUST n , 1978
By JIM >URRS
Star-Ttltgram Writer
Newsmen from Dallas and Fort Worth
Thursday confronted a Dallas man believed
to be the mysterious "umbrella
man" being sought by the House Assassinations
Committee.
The man, who works as a warehouse
manager for a Dallas equipment firm,
would neither confirm nor deny that he
pumped an umbrella into the air several
times ut the moment bullets struck President
John F. Kennedy on Nov. 22,1963.
1 ie did say he would agree to talk with
the assassinations committee about the
matter.
"1 don't want to talk to newsmen," the
man said.
The man was located in Dallas
Wednesday by independent assassination
researcher Penn Jones of Midlothian
and Dallas Morning News reporter Earl
Clolz, who received a tip on the man from
another man who asked not to be identified.
The "umbrella man" long has been the
subject of conjecture by assassination
rcse;jrchers.
PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN in Dealey
Plaza at the time of the shooting show the
•umbrella man" acting in a strange
manner.
First, just as the presidential motorcade
turned in front of the Texas School
Book Depository, the man is seen open-iPjjl
a black umbrella, although the day,
at that time, was sunny and cloudless.
In the famous Zapruder film, the umbrella
can be seen moving up and down
rapidly just as Kennedy's limousine
passes. It was at that point that bullets hit
the president.
,-\s the limousine sped off. spectators
began diving for cover or racing toward a
grassy knoil area in the belief that a gunman
was hidden there.
Several photos, however, show the
"umbrella man ' calmly silting on the
curb of Elm Street. Another man is
shown joining the "umbrella man" on
the curb.

THE OTHER .MAN, who appears from
the photos to be either a black or Latin, ib
pictured pulling something from his hip
pocket and holdinj; it to his face
.Many researchers through the years
have alleged that the •'umbrella man"
could have been a signal man for an assassination
team and that the other man
was talking on a ualkie-talkie
As the people in Dcale\ Plaza ran
excitedly, those two men apparently
spoke a few words and then separated,
walking off in opposite directions
There has been much speculation during
the past 15 years about the identity
and activities of the two men Although
the FBI identified virtually all of the
some 500 people in Dealey Plaza that
day, they have never identified the pai r.
Some conspiracy'believers have advanced
the theory that the man's umbrella
actually may "have been a sophisticated
weapon or dart gun. Such a weapon
was disclosed by the Senate Intelligence
Conmittee in 1976 as part of the CIA's
arsenal.
FORT WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM
ON JULY 30. the House Assassination
Committee released one photo of the
"umbrella man ' in hopes someone could
identify him The picture was one of five
released by the committee, which hopes
toshed further light on the assas.sination.
The newl\' released photograph ma\'
ha\ e motivated the anonymous tipster to
contact Jones in Midlothian Jones and
Gob. were given the warehouse manager's
name
The tipster told Jones and Go!/ that he
had known the man in 1963 and that the
man told him he was in Dealey Plaza
with an umbrella.
lie said the man told him he pumped
the umbrella up and down to protest
Kennedy's father's dealing with the .Nazis
during World War II The man
claimed the umbrella was a widespread
form of protest during the war.
Thursday, Jones and Golz, along with
other newsmen, confronted the warehouse
manager at his job.

"THE SIMILARITIES between (the
warehouse manager) and the 'umbrella
man' are chilling," Jones said. The other
newsmen agreed that the man bore a
staking resemblance to the figure in the
committee's photograph.
The warehouse manager was not openly
hostile to the newsmen, but he refused
to answer any questions about his activities
(in Nov.' 22. 1963.

question, the man said he would agree to
meet w ith the assassinations committee
