Open Letter to Bob Katz, Carl Oglesby and Jeff Goldberg
of the Assassination Information Bureau
Dear Bob, Carl and Jeff:
I have just finished reading the final issue of Clandestine
America. To say that I'm disappointed in it, and in you, is
a mild vinderstatement. How could you possibly go out on a
note like that after your admirable beginnings? Perhaps you
will make a comeback some day and revive your image. I guess
I can partially understand your dilemma, brought about by
financial and other pressures.
During the Select Committee's public hearings, Jeff, you know
I was not too pleased with some of the comments coming from
AIB. However, that was perhaps a forgivable time, because
some degree of cooperation with Dr. Blakey was necessary in
order to continue gaining access to the committee and the
staff. Those of us who took strong issue with everthing
Blakey was doing, and argued with him and his staff privately
or publicly were indeed completely frozen out.
I took great pride in working so closely with Henry Gonzalez
and then Richard A. Sprague, Bob Tanenbaum, Bob Lehner, Cliff
Fenton, Ken Klein, Pat Orr, Jackie Hess and all the other staff
people in the pre Blakey era. I felt as though I were one of
the staff and I believe Richard A. Sprague and Bob Tanenbaum
wanted it that way. But when Sprague, Tanenbaum, Lehner and
the others were forced out, and Dr. Blakey introduced that
insidious secrecy agreement along with a paying type contract,
I knew the handwriting was on the wall.
The report and the hearings and the entire charade from July
1977 forward were so well orchestrated by Blakey and others
that it became what I have come to regard as the Final Cover
Up. I can now understand how Blakey did it. I can believe
now that he is, and always was an essential part of the Power
Control Group. For me the ultimate clincher on that score
was the way he handled the umbrella man and his totally
orchestrated response to the Gallery article on the CIA weapons
system that we contended was used in Dealey Plaza. That charade
