VOLUME V, NUMBER 10 MAY 22, 1981
INSTANT REPUY By Jack White and Gary Mack
For several hours we watched the unedited, un-narrated
NBC videotape of the Reagan shooting.
The first thing we noticed was that much more
information can be gleaned from it than from
all the other_edited/narrated versions seen on
the various newscast tapes.
First, all 6 of Hinckley's shots are clearly
audible. (See Gary Mack story following for
timing of shots).
Then, using the still-frame capability of the
tape machine, we stopped the tape at the precise
moment each shot is heard. With the picture
frozen one-thirtieth of a second after each shot,
we then taped the still frame representing the
effect of each bullet fired. Looking at these
still frames over and over, it seemed to us that
none of the 6 shots could have hit Reagan.
For further study we converted the stills to
35ram slides and b/w prints. Reproduced at left
are the 6 photos at the exact moment of each shot.
(See Gary Mack story on next pa[_,e for Gary's
analysis of each photo).
The photos have been arranged vertically so that
the chrome trim of the car lines up, eliminating
the slight panning effect of NBC cameraman
Fielman, and giving a clearer understanding of
positions and relationships. Keep in mind that
the camera is almost stationary and about 5|--feet
off the ground.
Here's what the photos show, top to bottomj
1. From extreme right edge leftward—silhouette
of Officer Delahanty's head; then Brady's bald
head and face and shoulder and right arm; above
Brady's shoulder SSman Parr; Reagan with left arm
waving; McCarthy looking; Deaver closest to camera.
Brady has been hit.
2. Lower right—Brady on knees; chest,shoulder and
right arm visible. Reagan still waving. Deaver
ducking. Parr and McCarthy looking. Shot appears
to hit no one; in this position it certainly coiild
not ricochet off of cari
